Located in the Sierra Nevada, between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, Alpine County is the smallest county in California in terms of population, with 1,145 residents as of 2007. The county seat is Markleeville. Created in 1854 during a silver boom, the county was formed from parts of Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. Notable locations include Eldorado National Forest, Turtle Rock County Park, Grover Hot Springs State Park, the picturesque Woods Lake Campground and Granite Lake among many others.
