Created in 1854, Amador County is located in Sierra Nevada, California, with a county seat Jackson. The main industry is wine-growing. Amador County is renowned for its Zinfandel, with some of the vineyards being more than 125 years old, among which is the original Grandpère vineyard, planted with Zinfandel before 1869 and believed to be the oldest Zinfandel vineyard in America. The county is named after soldier, rancher and miner Jose Maria Amador, who together with several Native Americans established a successful gold mining camp near the present town of Amador City. The word amador from Spanish means “one who loves”. There are numerous gold mines in Amador County such as the Argonaut Mine, the Kennedy Mine, and the Sutter Mine, with many century-old gold-mining places turned into popular tourist destinations. Some of the landmarks in the county are the well-known Salt Springs Recreation Site, Hidden Lake, Antelope Creek and Chaw'se Indian Grinding Rocks State Historic Park. Other attractions include campgrounds areas with gold-panning activities, wineries with wine-tasting tours, numerous lakes for boating and fishing, and underground caves with tours.
