Created in 1850, Calaveras County is one of the original counties of California. Located in the Gold Country of California, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this county takes its name from the Calaveras River; the word calaveras comes from Spanish, meaning skulls. The county seat is San Andreas. Author Mark Twain spent many of his writing years there, setting his story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" in the county. To celebrate the story, the county hosts an annual County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, featuring a frog jumping contest. The county also lends its name to the uncommon gold telluride mineral calaverite. Some tourist attractions and landmarks include the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, a preserve of Giant Sequoia trees, York Creek, Sandy Gulch State Historic Landmark and White Azalea Campground. There are fun activities for every season and year-round adventures like historic and picturesque gold rush towns, award winning California vineyards and tasting rooms, micro-breweries and pubs, eclectic art galleries, antique shops, and gold rush museums, making Calaveras County a great place to live in and study.
