Located at the far northwest corner of California, Del Norte County is famous for its giant coastal redwoods, with heights reaching over 350 feet, rocky, primitive beaches and sea stacks, a variety of unique plants and flowers, dozens of species of coastal birds, pristine rivers and historic lighthouses. The county seat is Crescent City. Del Norte is well known among Bigfoot enthusiasts as the site of the famous Patterson-Gimlin film. The area was first explored in the early 1800s by pioneer Jedediah Smith. Notable locations in Del Norte include Elk Valley Recreation Site, Harrington Lake, Yellowjacket Creek and Pelican State Beach among many others. The county is home to the satellite campus of College of the Redwoods, a two-year college in Humboldt County. Public education through twelfth grade is provided by the Del Norte County Unified School District, with the primary high school being Del Norte High School. There are several private parochial and charter schools as well.
