Formed in 1861, Lake County is located in the north central region in California, north of the San Francisco Bay Area. It takes its name from Clear Lake, the main geographic feature in the county, the largest natural lake in the state and possibly the oldest lake in North America. The county seat is Lakeport. Lake County offers a wide variety of activities; its natural forests, local parks and two state parks are the perfect sites for hiking, rock and stone collecting, bird watching, with areas for hang gliding, fishing, and hunting. There are the two county museums - the Lake County Museum in Lakeport and the Lower Lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum in Lower Lake. Annual community events, festivals and fairs offer fun for all ages. With a population of almost 65,000, Lake County is home to friendly communities, a number of attractions, outdoor recreation and beautiful rural scenery.
