Mariposa County, home of Yosemite National Park, is famous for its magnificent sceneries, outdoor attractions and historic towns. It’s located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and was created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Its population is around 18,000, all rural. The county seat is Mariposa. An interesting fact about Mariposa County is that there are no permanent traffic lights anywhere in it. It began as the state's largest county, thus known as the "Mother of Counties". The county is named after Mariposa Creek; the word comes from Spanish, meaning butterfly. Mariposa's location and climate make it the perfect setting for a number of activities such as camping, biking, rafting, rock climbing, skiing and much more.
