Modoc County is a small county with population of less than 10,000. It’s situated in the far northeast corner of California, bordering the state of Oregon to the north and the state of Nevada to the east. The county seat is Alturas. Modoc County was established in 1874; its name is derived from the Native American Modoc people who inhabited the region. The county offers an abundance of wilderness and natural beauty in a remote, peaceful location. Even today, there are cattle drives across open terrain and Surprise Valley; nearby Modoc National Forest offers residents and tourists a wide variety of recreational activities including fishing, hunting, camping and picnicking. Modoc County is a place where the West still thrives - the county's official slogans include "The last best place" and "Where the West still lives." If you like quiet, rural settings, and simple old-fashioned lifestyle, then Modoc County is just right for you.
