Sierra County is located in the Sierra Nevada and divided by the Pacific Crest. Both the east and west ends have a rich history. The county was once inhabited by the Maidu and Washoe Indians, but today’s history is closer related to the Gold Rush. Following the discovery of gold, around 16,000 miners settled in the region between 1848 and 1860. As the Gold Rush waned, the county’s population slowly decreased to its present number of 3,584. The county seat is Downieville. Notable locations include Salmon Creek Campground, Babbit Peak Research Natural Area, Calpine Park and North Fork Oregon Creek. The Sierra County Office of Education manages the county’s public schools.
